A small ulcer usually develops on the man’s penis or woman’s vulva about three weeks after intercourse with an infected person. It is a highly infectious disease where organisms multiply at such a fast rate that within thirty minutes of being infected the organism has infected the bloodstream.
The first sign of syphillis is the small ulcer on the penis which may appear as a pimple or hard chancre. The ulcer could appear around the mouth or anus. Glands then begin to swell. If any of these symptoms develop within ten to ninety days of intercourse a man must visit a doctor to have the ulcer diagnosed.
Syphillis is easily curable and it is believed that if it were possible to treat everyone currently infected with the disease, within a period of one month the disease could be eradicated completely.
Unless a man is treated when the ulcer is present the disease can continue to develop and six to eight weeks later he may begin to suffer headaches, sore throat and skin rash. Some men develop grey, flat growths in the mouth and around the anus.
It is customary for a check-up to be carried out by means of blood tests for about twelve months to ensure the disease has been cured.
