For all of us, from the age of twenty it is downhill all the way. It is a fact, unless we are taken off by an accident or serious illness, instead of dying at our peak (in terms of looks, fitness and ability), when we breathe our last our bodies are in an advancing state of decay and collapse. Perhaps the Great Creator has it wrong. It would have been kinder and more enjoyable if our lives moved on an upward curve so that we popped off to the next world at a high peak rather than fade out exhausted at the end of a long run, our faculties worn out. However, that is how it is. The route unchangeable. Although some of us weather the years better than others, from the age of twenty our bodies are programmed to age.
All is not lost of course. If growing old is inevitable, feeling irreconcilably old is not. If a wise man in his thirties keeps his body rich in strength, energy and sexual drive, by his forties he should still be able to consider himself a good specimen even if the edges look slightly tarnished. Fortunately the changes come slowly and recent studies show that if you get to seventy in good condition then you have another twelve to twenty years ahead of you yet.
