Worries, anxieties and fear engender nothing but agitation — and upset the proper secretion of digestive juices. A simple illustration will prove this point. An angry, aggressive dog will not digest its food properly. It will lie around listlessly, discontented and sullen, unwilling to eat its food when it is time to do so, actually refusing to touch anything. The dog’s organism is influenced by the mood forced upon it. Newfoundlands are known to lose their appetite when they feel sad or upset. But the animal takes a much more natural approach to the problem than we do. Instead of looking for some favourite food, the dog simply fasts; it does not eat at all until the disturbance has passed and it is well again. Years ago, fasting was customary for many people, but today most of us think we would die if we did not get our meals at the usual times. Only in times of privation do such people prove that their health is actually better than they had believed it to be. If it were not so, the enormous streams of refugees from war and famine would have few survivors. No, believe me, sensible fasting will not kill but benefit us, and will benefit the liver in particular.

I took sips of my medicine made up of Lachesis 12x, Echinacea and clay. Later, I decided to take Belladonna 4x as well, in the hope that it might do some good since I had handled deadly nightshade the day before and this could have been to blame for my condition. The remedies were indeed helpful, stimulating my system well, and at midday I was able to vomit. Strangely enough I brought up my lunch from the day before. I had not noticed such sluggish digestion before, since my system is usually quite efficient.
Unfortunately, by now I was much too tired to look around for a remedy to relieve the nausea, although Nux vomica 4x and Ipecacuanha 4x would have served me well. I had worked too hard during the previous week and this probably contributed to my feeling of utter weariness. But when I began to experience cramping pains in my heart I added a few drops of heart tonic to my medicine mixture and within five minutes my heart had calmed down. When the bowels were quite empty, discharging nothing but water, and the medicine which I kept sipping continued to work in the body, I soon began to feel better. By this time, deep-breathing caused only a slight feeling of soreness in the bowels and my otherwise healthy body had triumphed over the poison.

Our sympathetic nervous system is a greater marvel of technology than, for example, a telephone system. But if something goes wrong with it the consequences can be dreadful, which is why I call it our ‘nasty’ sympathetic nervous system.
Never in my life had my sympathetic nervous system troubled me as much as it did recently, during a period of much stress and worry. It was in such a state that I left St Gallen and headed for the Engadine. Shortly after I had started my journey, I felt severe spasmodic pains in the stomach area, so that I could hardly bear to continue sitting any longer. Unfortunately, I had not brought any Petadolor with me, which would have relieved the cramps. Usually I have a good stomach, but on this occasion it was so upset that I brought up my whole lunch. In spite of the beautiful weather, the otherwise enjoyable ride up to the Engadine was agonising. All night long I had severe pains in the stomach, which felt as if it were tied in a knot. After my arrival in the Engadine I was able to control the nausea with Nux vomica 4x, and Crataegus helped to calm my agitated heart.

Where surgery is necessary, it should not be considered as a complete cure, making further treatment unnecessary. On the contrary, post-operative treatment is essential in order to eradicate the cause of the disease. Iodine remedies, especially in the case of exophthalmic goitre, are not at all indicated and should be carefully avoided. Instead, choose foods that contain traces of organic iodine, for these definitely serve to cure goitre. Once again, the two herbal seasoning salts Herbamare and Trocomare, both made with sea salt, are recommended first of all. Furthermore, effective postoperative treatment of goitre includes plant products rich in fibre and iodine. Watercress is high in iodine and should be eaten in salads when it is in season. It is also good for exophthalmic goitre and will not harm the patient. In addition, homoeopathic and herbal remedies can be used to good effect.
Cabbage poultices, alternating with clay poultices, preferably prepared with a decoction of oak bark, have been found excellent for the treatment of goitre. If the cabbage poultices prove too strong in their effect, leave them on only as long as the patient is able to stand them. In time, the period of application may be extended as the patient becomes accustomed to them. Let me add that kelp in combination with Urticalcin have given good results in post-operative treatment too.

Another natural remedy that increases the blood pressure is raw carrot juice. People with high blood pressure must therefore abstain from drinking carrot juice, but those with low pressure will benefit from it when taken in addition to the other indicated remedies. However, if carrots are eaten whole or as a salad, they will have no effect on the blood pressure; only the pure juice is curative. This applies also to beetroot juice.
If high altitudes make you feel dizzy and you wish to overcome the spell quickly, you might like to try caffeine; have a strong cup of coffee and the symptoms will quickly pass. If you live in a coastal area and have low blood pressure, oysters are excellent for regulating pressure and improving, at the same time, an insufficiency of the sex glands. Of course, you will have to eat them regularly.
