Our sympathetic nervous system is a greater marvel of technology than, for example, a telephone system. But if something goes wrong with it the consequences can be dreadful, which is why I call it our ‘nasty’ sympathetic nervous system.

Never in my life had my sympathetic nervous system troubled me as much as it did recently, during a period of much stress and worry. It was in such a state that I left St Gallen and headed for the Engadine. Shortly after I had started my journey, I felt severe spasmodic pains in the stomach area, so that I could hardly bear to continue sitting any longer. Unfortunately, I had not brought any Petadolor with me, which would have relieved the cramps. Usually I have a good stomach, but on this occasion it was so upset that I brought up my whole lunch. In spite of the beautiful weather, the otherwise enjoyable ride up to the Engadine was agonising. All night long I had severe pains in the stomach, which felt as if it were tied in a knot. After my arrival in the Engadine I was able to control the nausea with Nux vomica 4x, and Crataegus helped to calm my agitated heart.
